Delete duplicate/older program versions from openwith - Mac Big Sur

I have so older versions of for example visual studio code. But how to delete them to only show one version?

I tried this tutorial from gadgethacks which didnt work because it is probably from 2014.

Does anyone know a fix for this? I tried googling which didnt bring me any good results.

MacBook Pro M1 external display connection issue

I am trying to connect my 2020 MacBook Pro (M1) to an external display via a thunderbolt 3 dock.

The dock is the Kensington SD5200T which supports M1 Macs with 1 external display.

The screen I am trying to connect to is the ASUS PG349Q via DisplayPort (1.4).

The MacBook is running the latest version of macOS (Big Sur 11.2.3).

When I connect the MacBook to the dock using the included Thunderbolt 3 cable the internal display flickers (resolution changes, windows flash on and off the display) until it eventually connects to the external display (this can take upwards of 1 minute).

I have tried the dock and MacBook with an LG 5k thunderbolt display which works fine and I'm using the DisplayPort cable from my PC so I know the cable isn't the issue.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Can I drive this 34 inch samsung display with my macbook pro?

I own a 13 inch early 2015 macbook pro and am in the market for an ultrawide display for my home office. I've landed on this display as a contender for purchase, but am worried that my macbook will not be able to drive the display properly.

The resolution for the display is 3,440 x 1,440. According to apple here, the HDMI port can support resolutions up to 3840-by-2160 at 30Hz. What about the thunderbolt 2 port? I understand the thunderbolt 2 port also doubles as a minidisplay port, however apple does not mention supported resolutions.

Can I use the minidisplay port to drive this monitor? If not, is my only option the HDMI? Could I do thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3?

Any information on how I might be able to drive this display would be appreciated.

I install apps on OS X 10.9.5, Then They Disappear

I have a problem with my iMac 🖥 where I install an app from the App Store, it says it's installed, but then I check the Launchpad and the app is not there. Some important details you may need to help solve this are: my OS is OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks, and I'm installing iMovie from the App Store. Do you know how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

I Need iMovie 10.1 or Greater for Mavericks (No App Store) [closed]

I like to edit videos, and I really need iMovie for my Mac. I run macOS X 10.9 Mavericks and I need a copy of iMovie 10.1 or Newer (Up to 10.1.10) as a .dmg file. I need the 60FPS capability because I make trailers and I edit for people. I would also accept a .app. I don't know if iMovie 10.1 is supported on Mavericks, but I know this trick where you can edit Info.plist to make it compatible. I could go up to El Capitan or Yosemite, but they are both REALLY slow on a Core 2 Duo (Penryn). I boot it up only to get a spinning lollipop (That's what I call it). I need an iMovie file, but the internet is riddled with a bunch of flash player update scams, "Your Mac has 42 Viruses. Call this number for help", broken links, and fake torrents that give me a (Necessary Driver Update). If anyone knows where I can find compatible software, that would be great! Thanks in advance!

Internet Recovery doesn't see disk, but able to boot normally

I have a MacBook Pro (mid-2015) that I want to completely wipe.

2+ years ago, I installed my own 1TB SSD. Everything works completely fine, and always has; I can boot into the OS, it runs fast, plenty of space left on the drive (600+ GB).

But when I boot up with CMD+R to try disk utility, things get weird.

  1. It boots into Internet Recovery instead of MacOS Recovery.
  2. Once Internet Recovery loads (~5 minutes), Disk Utility doesn't show my 1TB Drive. Only the "disk0" & "OS X Base System."
  3. Reinstall OSX doesn't give me the option of selecting my 1TB drive, or any drive for that matter, given only the 1TB drive is installed. Plus, Reinstall OS X is trying to reinstall Yosemite (10.10) meanwhile the 1TB drive has Big Sur (11.1) installed.

Any idea why this is happening, or what I can do to wipe the drive? I have everything I need from it, so I don't need to salvage any data in the meantime. Preparing to give it away, and need to make sure my data is erased.

Things I've done:

  1. Reset SMC & PRAM (SMC a few times).
  2. Ran Disk Utility - First Aid on the disk while inside the OS.

Podcasts connect "Can't parse your feed"

I'm trying to submit a podcast to Podcasts Connect and I get the error

Can't parse your feed.

With a status of

Failed Validation

This is my feed. I've used multiple rss validators (Here's the list)

Among others. Every validator says that my rss is good or has nothing bigger than a few warnings, but whenever the Apple validator at Podcasts Connect gives this error I mentioned saying it cant parse the feed, but not any further description. Any Idea of what could my problem be or where is my mistake?

UPDATE: Just as a test I tried to submit it to Spotify and it didn't worked.

Is there a reason for slow video streaming streaming on Mac OS compared to windows? [closed]

I was trying to stream a video and I noticed how slow it was and constantly stopping to load. I tried youtube videos on all major browsers and Safari showed to be the least resource hungry. However, I tried the same pages and same resolutions on my windows machine and they ran smoothly while on Chrome. My mac is the 2019 16 inch which I got on Christmas while my windows machine is from 2017. I am aware that this is a very general question but I only tested this on youtube and similar browsers. Edge seemed to eat my cpu while streaming 4k. I am recent mac user and this called my attention along with how hot my MacBook gets when connected to an external display. Edge being Edge

Safari browser inactive after 2 hours

I've been trying to resolve this issue with my MacBook for 2 months and finally reaching out for help. When I Power Cycle my MacBook Pro (2017, Catalina 10.15.7), I can use Safari successfully for a while. After about 2 hours of non use, I try to use Safari and it will not reload or bring up new websites. Same with Chrome. However, I can use Firefox successfully after 2 hours.

  • I have made sure browsers are up to date with latest version. I cannot move to Big Sur since a couple of pieces of software I need for mainframe interface are not going to do anymore updates. We are investigating options at this point for other solutions.
  • I have turned off Safari extensions to make sure these are not the issues.
  • I have RoboForms, DropBox and CleanMyMac running in the background. Turning these 3 off did not have any impact on the issue.
  • I turned off screensaver to eliminate it as a possible culprit.
  • I have tried turning off WiFi and changing to a different network but the browser still does not work. (I use my iPhone on cellular data and not connected to network.) I have combed through my network settings to make sure Proxy is not turned on by accident and DNS is using the router.
  • I have used Activity Monitor to stop all agents that seem to be associated with Safari and Chrome but that did not resolve the issue.
    • Safari shows the blue "attempting to connect" progress bar in the URL window at 1/8th progress but never completes or shows an error message.
    • Chrome starts loading the website but fails and shows "unable to reach server" message.
  • I have cleared PRAMS on MacBook and cleared cache on the browser.
  • I have tried Private Browser window on Safari and Chrome but no luck.

The only way I can get Safari to work after it gets into this state is to power cycle my MacBook. Reboot does not resolve the issue. It's weird since I Safari and Chrome do not work but Firefox does. And I have confirmed it is new data and not cached data in Firefox. What am I missing? Power Cycle seems to indicate some sort of memory issue but I don't believe this is the issue since I can still use Firefox browser and internet programs such as Reddit app, Apple News, FB messenger. I'm good with terminal windows and linux commands if there is some sort of command I can issue to turn on logging at the system level. I've looked through the logs that are turned on but I have not seen anything to relating to timeouts to resolve this. I'm just not too sure what I need to tweak to capture and resolve this issue. Wireshark shows that the commands to websites are going out and coming back since the browser tab changes to the website URL but the UI page does not display the results.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Donald

How to troubleshoot WD My Cloud Home connection

I've got a WD My Cloud Home that I use as my personal NAS. I installed the software WD Discovery (in a Mac Mini with OS version 10.11.6) so it could detect such device. Until now, it has been working fine, but recently the WD drive isn't shown in Finder, so I cannot access its contents. WD Discovery still detects it, but when clicking on the device, the folder isn't shown either.

Nonetheless, I can access its contents via web and through another Mac Mini with the latest OS, so the NAS is working fine. Therefore, I was wondering what steps should I take in order to troubleshoot the connection of a Mac with a NAS.

Easily Type Esperanto ^ characters using x convention on iPhone

As some of you may know, Esperanto has several characters that have diacritics: ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, and ŭ. None of these characters are available in the standard iOS 13.6 keyboard (what I am using currently). The two workarounds that are sometimes used in such situations are the h-convention (so read "ch" as "ĉ", etc.) and the x-convention (so read "cx" as "ĉ", etc.). See here

I do rather prefer to use the letters with diacritics than the h or x conventions. My current workaround as a beginner has been: whenever I learn a new word that has a diacritic, I add a keyboard shortcut from the x-convention spelling to the standard spelling. So now I have many keyboard shortcuts: mangxas -> manĝas (eats), cxambro -> ĉambro (room), etc. This way whenever I type the x convention, I get the correct letter after all. It really helps not to have to switch keyboards or otherwise fiddle with many steps to write each diacritic letter, especially for learning a language through duolingo where exercises switch back and forth in terms of which input language they require, and some of those exercises are timed.

While this works well-enough when I am learning 1-2 words/day, it does take additional time that I feel is not optimally spent. It also is likely unsustainable for at least two reasons: (A) my vocabulary acquisition is being slowed by how quickly I can add words to what is ultimately a full dictionary that I am writing, and more importantly (B) Esperanto is a highly inflected and agglutinative language. So when I learned that "manĝas" is a verb meaning "eats", I also (eventually) learn "manĝis" "eaten", "manĝos" "will eat", "manĝi" "to eat", "manĝu" "eat!". And then there are the the endings for adjectives "manĝa" ("food"); nouns "manĝo" ("food"), both of which have plural ("manĝaj", "manĝoj") and object ("manĝan", "manĝon") and plural-object forms ("manĝajn", "manĝojn"), and several dozen different suffixes, infixes, and compound words such as "manĝulo" ("eater"/"foodie"), "matenmanĝo" (breakfast), which themselves have their own verb/adjective/plural/object forms....

While just having "mangx"->"manĝ" would have some additional utility, it would force me into a "type root, press space, delete space, add ending" pattern of inefficiency without covering the cases of compound words, nor allowing easy input of the several infixes/suffixes that themselves have diacritic letters. For example, to type the verb "to blush" "ruĝiĝi" (from "ruĝ" "red" + "iĝi" "to become"), would involve typing "r u g x [space] i g x [space] [delete] [left-left] [delete] [right-right] i [space]", rather than just "r u g x i g x i [space]", which seems simple enough to me.

So I have three questions to ask of iOS:

  1. Is it possible for keyboard shortcuts (or assigning hot keys, or other typing method) to apply WITHIN words, rather than requiring a space to activate them? If I could just get "gx"->"ĝ" all the time, without typing a space before or after, that would be ideal.

  2. Is it possible to download/import a collection of keyboard shortcuts directly into my phone, rather than input each manually? It would not take too much coding to automate the creation a full dictionary of shortcuts that cover the vast majority of use cases. It would save me the time of manually entering them all, and still allow me to keep my "gx"->"ĝ" etc. method of input.

  3. If there is no reliable way to just get iOS to recognize that when I type "gx" I always want "ĝ" etc., is there any method of getting these diacritic letters easily accessible by adding them to the options for accented letters that pop up when I hold down c/g/h/j/s/u? Currently none are available by this method. (If this involves switching the keyboard I am fine so long as it stays a QWERTY or DVORAK layout.)

I am open to other ideas, if the above are all untenable. Clearly I am not the first person to type Esperanto in iOS. I would like to not have to learn a new layout, and I do want the diacritic letters to be as easily typed as possible, because they are not rare.

TL;DR: Is there anyway in iOS 13.6 to get "gx"->"ĝ" in the middle of words when typing?

How can I fix my iPhone not showing up in Screen Time on my other devices?

My iPhone SE 2020 won't show up in Screen Time on my Mac or iPad. All three are signed into the same iCloud account and fully updated to the latest releases of iOS, macOS and iPadOS respectively. All three have 'Share Across Devices' enabled in Screen Time. The Mac and iPad both show up in Screen Time on all three devices but the iPhone data only shows up on itself.

Things I've tried:

  • Toggling 'Share Across Devices', on iPhone
  • Toggling 'Share Across Devices', on all three devices at the same time
  • Switching Screen Time off and on, on iPhone
  • Switching Screen Time off and on, on all 3 devices at the same time
  • Logging out of iCloud and then logging back in, on iPhone

I suppose one option is to try wiping my iPhone and setting it up again from scratch but I'd like to know if there are any other things I can try first.

Automatically Delete Files From Downloads Folder Daily Unless Tagged With "Keep"?

How can I automate the deletion of files from my downloads folder but keep files I've tagged with "Keep"? I've been able to use Automator to delete files daily, but I can't work with tags in Automater. Most likely this requires AppleScript (I'm fairly new to AppleScript). I've created an AppleScript to delete files from Downloads folder, but it's not working (I can't tell if it's a permissions issue), and I'm lost on how file tags/labels work in AppleScript.

What iOS apps read health records from Apple Health?

Apple's website says that "third-party apps can request access to your health records" but I can't find any apps in the app store that read them. Are there any apps that read health records (e.g., allergies, medications, or immunizations, lab results, etc.)?

brew openvpn-connect on macos fails to upgrade or remove

I installed openvpn-connect with brew install --cask openvpn-connect all good Today I run brew update; brew upgrade, there was an upgrade for openvpn-connect, the upgrade failed. I have since tried to uninstall it completely but the uninstall fails with:

The application appears to be gone, however brew still tracks is as installed.

How to reset the Finder to its default settings?

Can the Finder be reset to all original Default Settings?

Note there is a specific motivation: I no longer can view external DVD/CD drives from Finder even though they both can play movies/music CD's: see DVD/CD Drive no longer shows in Finder . Resetting to Defaults would just be another thing to try.

MacBook Pro 10-15s delay on power button

I have very weird problem. When I want to power on my macbook pro after I press the button I need to wait 10-15s to see Apple Logo icon. It is so frustrating every time I need to restart my mac I need to wait 10-15s on black screen and later everything is working perfect. I have read questions on official apple website and they suggest that in this kind of problem I need to reset PRAM, SMC and select bootable disk to MacOS. After that I am still getting this problem.

I have done a clean instalation too and I am still getting this problem. Thanks for any help

Macbook PRO 2018 15,1 and I am running on latest Catalina

Catalina localhost ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

I have seen a number of threads that are close but no answer quite hit the mark for my issue. I have a MacOS AMP environment for testing that was setup using homebrew and that had been working swimmingly in Catalina since about January. Then about a month ago, after a "minor" Catalina update (and resulting crash), I got ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED when trying to access http://localhost (and 127.0.0.1 in case you are wondering about the hosts file).

At the time this happened, one thread I read suggested it could have something to do with the AV software. After I uninstalled the AV software, I was once again able to access localhost. Problem solved...or so I thought. Because after the latest Catalina update, I am once again not able to access. Thing is, I never reinstalled the AV program.

The MacOS firewall is off. Apache and PHP error logs are clear.

$ sudo apachectl configtest

Returns

Syntax OK

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

Can MacBook Air (2020) be charged from airplane USB?

I read somewhere that the new MacBook Air computers (the ones with USB-C) can be charged slowly from any USB source using a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

I'd imagine that a plane USB port delivers 5W or 10W power. When doing light tasks on the Air, I would imagine that, even when not charging, would allow to extend the battery life significantly.

Can anyone confirm that this works? What cable do I need?

2009 MacBook Pro does not respond to the Option/Command keys on boot up

I want to flash my 4.1 to 5.1. I then want to turn off SIP. No matter what I do, different keyboards tried, different USB ports, nothing I do will let me boot off a USB drive, or into OS recovery or OS Utils.

Proliferation of unknown bash processes when invoking ps

I'm having some very strange behavior in my shell that I don't even begin to understand. I apologize for being somewhat lost, but I can't seem to turn up many obvious answers in a web search.

I'm using iTerm2 and the fish shell, and after upgrading to Catalina, invoking the ps command seems to cause an unspecified bash process to proliferate which has an overwritten name and cannot be killed in the conventional way.

After invoking ps several times I get the following output:

I'm assuming this has something to do with the move from bash to zsh as the native shell in Catalina, but I'm otherwise completely baffled. I don't know if anyone has a solution, but even a hint on how to diagnose it would be helpful.

Mac unable to set rotations of multiple monitors

Having a little problem with my MacbookPro 2019-15inch-i9 (Big Sur 2020.07.08). I have two vertical monitors(ASUS VG249 1080p 144Hz)(BenQ GW2270 1080p 60Hz) and one normal monitor(DELL 2718Q 4k) set up with it, and they were working fine with a "H-shape" setup.

However I just found after I updated to Big Sur for a week, the setting is failed. I am able to set only 1 monitor rotated. I tried to set the second rotation after the first rotation is successful, but the this operation would reset all the settings of Display, which means the three monitors are all horizontal.

Plus, I've known it can also be a problem to Mac OS 10.15 or 10.14, I've searched it and found these problem unsolved.

Any help would be appreciated.

How can I prevent a recording from being inadvertently stopped?

After I hit Record on my iPhone for video or audio recordings, the Stop button is too easily triggered accidentally, e.g. by the wind or physical matter (dust, paper) that manages to touch the phone screen. How can I force the phone to require more than a touch (e.g. a password) to stop or pause a recording?

How to display google calendar "reminders" on macOS calendar app?

So google recently implemented reminders on both their web application and their mobile applications. This is a nifty little feature that instead of creating events on your calendar it creates these entries which, if not marked as done, will stay there until you complete them.

When you add reminders a new "Reminders" calendar now appear under "My Calendars" list, however, I noticed that the macOS calendar app does not display this calendar, hence, no reminders there.

Is there some way to also see reminders within the calendar app on macOS?

How can I change the desktop wallpaper for a restricted, parental controlled account?

We have an iMac with several accounts (two admins, one normal and one parental controlled).

My son's account (the parental controlled) will not let me change the desktop wallpaper! Seriously? I even told it to allow him to run system preferences (once) and even though I chose another wallpaper image, it won't work.

SURELY there is a way to change the simple desktop wallpaper for a managed account without opening the terminal?

How can I unpack a .deb on Mac OS X without installing it?
