My iPhone cannot "see" all the books on my Mac via Mojave iTunes

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:45 PM PDT

I have 18 books in Books.app on my Macbook Pro running Mojave. When I open iTunes and look at the Books on my phone, it shows 5 books.

Changing the iTunes radiobutton from "All books" to "Selected books" lets me select among those 5. As far as I can tell, the other 13 are invisible to it.

Any clues where to look, what settings to change, what to reboot (again), or whatever?

Please don't tell me to upgrade my OSX, I have to much expensive 32-bit software to make that attractive.

Thanks.

iOS App Signing Certificate Issue

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 10:47 PM PDT

I am trying to publish an app to the AppStore, but I have been having an issue with certificates when trying to manually sign an App. I am using Xcode 11.1 on Mojave, and I am unwilling to update my macOS ( company's Macbook, not personal )

The Distribution Provisioning Profile I am using is created using a newly generated iOS distribution certificate. I have made sure to have both iOS Development & Distribution Certificate created using the same CSR file, and have both certificates in my macbook. These certificates are generated by someone else though, a third-party vendor we are working with.

Currently, only the distribution certificate is imported in the keychain. When choosing the provisioning profile file, "Production Profile" in Target -> Signing & Capabilities -> All -> Signing, an error message shows:

No signing certificate "iOS Development" found No "iOS Development" signing certificate matching team ID "ABC" with a private key was found.

Yet, when the iOS Development Certificate is installed into the keychain, The error message becomes:

Provisioning profile "Production Profile" doesn't include signing certificate "iPhone Developer: John Doe(XYZ)".

This happens probably because of the Team ID mismatch (ABC vs XYZ), yet from what I have read, the development certificate's team Id will always be randomly assigned. This creates a catch 22 problem. I have tried to use automatic signing instead but that was met with another issue that is probably out of the scope of this question. Also, it was automatically assigned to Apple Development Signing Certificate anyway, so that is out of the question.

Another iOS app I have worked with did not have this issue, and I have been trying to resolve this for a week.

Why does the 2021 Mac have a lower Ghz processor than the 2017?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:22 PM PDT

When I look at the 2017 specs it seems the 2017 provides

3.4GHz 3.4GHz quad‑core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz) 3.5GHz 3.5GHz quad‑core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 4.1GHz) Configurable to 4.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz) 3.8GHz 3.8GHz quad‑core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz) Configurable to 4.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz)

Where as the 2021 processor starts at only 3.1Ghz and goes up to the same processing of 3.8Ghz:

3.1GHz 3.1GHz 6‑core 10th-generation Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz

How to disable auto spellcheck options programmatically?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 03:03 PM PDT

I would like to write a shell script that runs on macos BigSur where I can access and modify settings you set in System Preferences. I basically want to disable any nuance of auto-correct.

In order to disable auto-correct I need to use the UI and go to System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text then unset the following boxes

  • Correct spelling automatically
  • Capitalize words automatically
  • Add full stop with double-space
  • Use smart quotes and dashes

How can I access then modify these values?

Audio Chipset for 2011 Macbook Pro

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 01:20 PM PDT

I have a 13-inch Macbook Pro from late 2011 and recently upgraded it to macOS Mojave using this patcher tool: http://dosdude1.com/mojave/. It has some preinstalled kext files that make the Mac work properly, but not everything works perfectly.

One of the main problems is that the built-in speakers are not being discovered by the computer. I tried plugging in headphones, but that didn't work either. I did a bit of research and found a kext file that might do the job, but I would need to find what audio chip the Mac uses.

If anyone knows what chipset the 2011 Macbook Pro has, or know another way to fix this issue, please let me know! Thanks!

Battery discharge while Macbook was turned off in 1 week. Possible causes?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 03:59 PM PDT

I brought my MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon about 1 month ago, and I'm using it to work on pet projects occasionally, but not daily. I left it unused for one week and when I turned it on it wasn't starting, as the battery was drained (the screen indicator was showing).

AFAIK laptops should not discharge entirely after a mere 1 week of no use. Charging it back went fine, the OS is reporting the battery health is good, coconutBattery was also showing that everything is ok, the battery has 3 cycles so far. I ran last shutdown in the terminal to double-check shutdowns and exclude the possibility that I put it to sleep instead. I also rand Apple Diagnostics and no problem was found, so I'd assume it's not the logic board or any other hardware. After charging I also did a quick test to see how much it discharges in about 2 hrs and then after 4 hrs, but it was still at 100%.

I've stored the notebook in a drawer at room temperature (~22°C). So, if the diagnostics are real, I can't think of what could've drained my battery. Any ideas?

EDIT: New idea that came to me: could it be that I closed the lid too fast after selecting shut down, consequently making it sleep instead or not turning off some hardware properly?

EDIT #2: I ended up investigating logs with log show --style syslog. There are some SMC errors saying something like "could not write SMC key". I'm quite new to innards of MacBook, but this sounds to me like it couldn't shut down properly. That would also explain why there are syslog entries from hours after I've shut down the computer and also from the following day.

How to transfer the data from an iOS app to the same app running on an M1 mac?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 09:26 AM PDT

I have an iOs app which I have been using to track personal data. I have found the same app on the App store on my M1 mac and can run it successfully. But it is blank because it was installed from the app store.

Apple has disabled sideloading of apps froman iOs device to an M1 mac (Apparently they cannot decide whether to allow it or not as they disabled and re-enabled this ability a couple of times. )

If I backup the iPhone and look in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup I can see the backup(labeled cryptically with a number) and the 256 folders in it. I can view the files in XCode but only see images. Documents are blank.

Even using iMazing, I can see the app and even transfer it to the mac desktop as an '.imazingapp'. But i cannot open or even examine the app to get my data. XCode only shows an icon-I cant even look inside it. There is no option to show 'package contents' when ctrl-clicking on the file.

The app has no ability to export data, send emails, etc.

How can I transfer my data from this app to the app running on the M1 mac? Ideally I wish I could just 'sideload' the app from my phone and the data would come with it. But NOOO, Apple does not allow that. Or maybe I am just ignorant of a trick that you all know.

How to take screenshots in rapid succession

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:56 PM PDT

Spamming cmd-shift-3 only takes a screenshot every second or so.

I remember being able to take fast screenshots in the past, maybe before Big Sur or Catalina.

Is it safe to delete these 4 files in the folder called dyld

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 09:36 AM PDT

The system storage seemed to take you a lot of space so I used this software which gives you a visual depiction of the size of files on your Mac (big files are big squares and so on) and turns out these 4 files in system have randomly inflated, it wasn't like this a few months ago. is it safe to delete these files they're in some folder called dyld. if not then what do I do to clear the system storage because I really need the space rn for some applications.enter image description here

Cant update/install homebrew packages with Kaspersky Security Software (Self Signed Cert)

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:47 PM PDT

At work we have Kaspersky installed. Kaspersky installs a self signed cert so it can decrypt/inspect web traffic. Chrome and everything works fine except for homebrew. When i try to install/update software this is what i see:

brew install yarn ==> Downloading https://yarnpkg.com/downloads/1.22.10/yarn-v1.22.10.tar.gz ######################################################################## 100.0%##O#- # curl: (35) error:1400443E:SSL routines:CONNECT_CR_SRVR_HELLO:tlsv1 alert inappropriate fallback Error: Failed to download resource "yarn" Download failed: https://yarnpkg.com/downloads/1.22.10/yarn-v1.22.10.tar.gz

Since it appears its a curl issue i tried to create a .curlrc file with insecure but that doesn't help at all. I'm able to call one of our IT admins over and temporarily turn off web anti-virus but that is starting to be a major pain every time i install/update software. They aren't, of course, going to allow me to permantely turn it off. I have this issue on no matter what mac i use (one is a m1 based mac and the other is an intel based mac).

How to avoid iTerm2 switching desktops before opening hotkey window

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 01:27 PM PDT

I've configured a fullscreen hotkey window as follows

enter image description here

If I hit the hotkey when the current desktop is a native full screen app, before opening the hotkey window, the desktop is changed to the first, free (not fullscreen) desktop.

Is there a way to prevent that? I want terminal to just open as an overlay without the annoying desktop change animation.

Album artwork missing after iTunes -> Music conversion

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 11:07 AM PDT

After changing my iTunes Library from iTunes to the new Music app on Big Sur many of my music files are missing album artwork inside the new Music app:

Music App missing covers

The thing that's worth nothing is that album artwork was embedded inside the .m4a files. There's a thumbnail of the image near the controls on music app, but it does not show as a big image on the application itself.

If I fire up the "mini player", the cover appears on top but not on individual files:

Miniplayer

Finally if we get to the filesystem itself, Finder is able to load and show the covers in individual files, observe the icons near the filename.

Files in Finder

If we look at additional information from Finder shows the artwork correctly too, and as you can see I've the file since 2011:

More info on Finder

Last but not least, there's the "more info" directly on the Music.app missing the cover:

Missing cover in more info Music.app

I even checked the tags on other software, in my case I just used Foobar2000 to check for metadata and foobar2000 detected everything as it should:

foobar2000 Details foobar2000 Artwork

So at the end my years-organized collection just lost almost 50% of the covers and is looking like some unorganized iTunes installation from the no tag MP3 era, the 90's:

Sad music collection

Any ideia of what may have happened and any idea on how to automate and fix this?

Thanks.

PS: I'm aware of the amusing dougscripts.com but now it's payware and I'm not sure if the scripts would solve the issue or not, it seems that even with the scripts it's a lot of manual work to fix my entire collection because something broke with Music.app.

EDIT: I've observed that all missing covers are embedded on PNG format. Those showing up are all JPEG.

Can iMessage send a video as-is, without converting it first?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 04:09 PM PDT

If I share a video file via iMessage, the recipient doesn't get the exact file I've shared, but a converted version of the video, which has a lower resolution and lower quality (e.g. when I share a 1080p H.265 video, iMessage actually sends a 300p H.264 blurry mess.)

Is there a way to make iMessage share a video without re-encoding it? What are the technical criteria that video files have to meet in order to be spared re-encoding? (codecs, profiles, resolution, file size)

I know I could share a URL to a file hosted elsewhere, but I want to have end-to-end encryption, and I don't want to require the recipient to perform any unusual steps or leave iMessage to view the video.

Linux Install on Mac. Macos Asks to Initialize

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 12:10 PM PDT

enter image description here

Install of Linux on Mac went fine, but I want to get rid of the initialize unreadable popup for the disk after macOS boots. Tried adding the UUIDs in the fstab file but it did not work.

Do I need the UUID of the disk itself? It's an 80 GB disk dedicated to Linux with 3 partition.

One 1 MB Bios Boot Partition, an EXT4 of 60 GB for Linux Filesystem and a Linux Swap of 15 GB.

I had added the UUIDs of the the three partition as that was all I could get of them.

Simple AppleScript script terminates early

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 06:04 PM PDT

I have an AppleScript script for Music that processes the selected tracks and modifies the track name.

Basically, it works.

If I select one item, it works without fail.

If I select multiple items, it will correctly modify the first item. Sometimes it will stop there; other times, it will process several more items. Rarely, it will process the entire list of selected tracks.

I've put in a delay to see if that would help, but it doesn't.

Any idea why this might be happening?

Here's my code:

tell application "Music" set selectedTracks to selection if selectedTracks is {} then return if (get class of (item 1 of selectedTracks)) is not file track then return repeat with i from 1 to (length of selectedTracks) set thisTrack to item i of selectedTracks tell thisTrack to set {trackName} to {get name} set my text item delimiters to {"/"} set theResults to text items in trackName set newTrackName to item 2 of theResults set newArtist to item 1 of theResults set newTrackName to my removeLeadingAndTrailingSpacesFrom(newTrackName) set newArtist to my removeLeadingAndTrailingSpacesFrom(newArtist) set name of thisTrack to newTrackName set artist of thisTrack to newArtist delay 1 end repeat end tell on removeLeadingAndTrailingSpacesFrom(sourceString) repeat while character 1 of sourceString = " " set sourceString to text 2 thru end of sourceString end repeat repeat while last character of sourceString = " " set endIndex to (length of sourceString) - 1 set sourceString to text 1 thru endIndex of sourceString end repeat return sourceString end removeLeadingAndTrailingSpacesFrom

  • Re-install the macOS from the macOS recovery
  • Delete the com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad plist file from the ~/Library/Preferences through two ways: file system and Default command
  • Reset the SMC
  • Reset the NVRAM

Should I partition an external drive before or after using Time Machine?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 08:37 PM PDT

If I partition my external drive into two parts, I'd like to be able to remove the partition at a later time in case I decide Time Machine should take up the whole disk.

Similarly, if I'm using Time Machine right after taking the external drive out of the box, I'd like to be able to partition the drive at a later time with the TM backup data still intact.

Which of the above two actually work?

Website says enable cookies even though they are enabled, on Catalina

I use the bill pay feature from my credit union. After upgrading to Catalina the bill pay feature reports that cookies are disabled.

Cookies are not disabled. I have cleared them, cleared history, restarted safari, restarted the computer. Still no love. You can see that new cookies have been created after logging in to the credit union. But the bill pay feature still reports that cookies are disabled. I have two systems running Mojave that don't have this problem. What could be blocking this web site from reading the cookie? The firewall maybe?

Can I create fonts drawn as outlined in Word 16 for Mac?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 03:20 PM PDT

I'm trying to make some colouring in pages for my daughter, and want to make a large letter per page for her to colour in.

On Windows I could select a letter, choose font and there's an outline option that I can check.

I can't see this on Microsoft Word for Mac - 16.23 - Office 365 Subscription.

Is anyone aware of ways to achieve this?

Workspaces not switching automatically

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 10:57 PM PDT

Despite the fact that I have told mission control under 10.8 to spaces when switching applications(to the key window), it does not appear to work. In fact the only time spaces works is when I tell it to switch using keyboard shortcuts. This started happening only once I unchecked show dashboard as space.

The following symptoms also occur: -Checking "show dashboard as space" does not re-enable dashboard -Dragging windows to the side of the screen does not cause spaces to switch -Keyboard shortcuts for mission control do not invoke mission control.

How can I prevent "Open With..." from accessing external drives?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Frequently, when I try to open the (10.9) Finder's "Open With..." menu, I experience a delay that appears to be due to connected FireWire drives. This delay is very long when the drives need to spin up, but is also perceptible when the drives have not spun down. For me, this delay makes no sense: I have no applications that I use stored on my external drives, and I have disabled Spotlight searches of these drives (using Spotlight's "Privacy" setting).

Is there some way to prevent the "Open With..." menu examining external drives?

Note that this is not a question about speeding up the OW menu in general (e.g., by pruning apps and file type associations), nor about keeping duplicate apps on external drives from appearing in the OW menu (I have none as my Spotlight settings noted above exclude them).

Activity Monitor in Mavericks "Show Memory Usage" dock icon gone?

Posted: 25 Apr 2021 05:20 PM PDT

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro with Mavericks installed and noticed that Activity Monitor doesn't have the "Show Memory Usage" dock icon option anymore. I really liked this option since I used it to prevent disk swapping by closing applications when I had too many open. What gives?
