How to display all DNS queries using Wireshark?

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I want to display all DNS queries originating from my macOS 11.2.3 system.

The issue is that neither Wireshark with a filter of dns nor sudo tcpdump port 53 show all DNS queries, besides DNS TXT queries for OpenDNS (and a few others), e.g.:

enter image description here

In particular, DNS A/AAAA queries are not displayed even thus I've issued several DNS A/AAAA queries manually (e.g. dig letspary.com and dig @81.167.36.12 letspary.com).

scutil --dns:

DNS configuration (for scoped queries) resolver #1 search domain[0] : home nameserver[0] : 81.167.36.12 nameserver[1] : 81.167.36.5 if_index : 6 (en0) flags : Scoped, Request A records reach : 0x00000002 (Reachable)

How can I display all DNS queries, including DNS A/AAAA queries?

Update:

I see that DNS A/AAAA queries are sent by applications to DNS resolver on localhost:53. So, the issue reduces to how do I display DNS queries made by the DNS resolver?

Click sounds in control center?

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:36 PM PDT

I have a 2020 iPhone SE on iOS 14.4.1 and it seems when I tap and hold on the brightness or sound bar (or really anything in the control center) it always makes a keyboard click sound.

I've attempted to make this stop, but it seems the only way to do so is to put my phone on silent.

I've looked everywhere in settings and can't seem to find it. System Haptics seemed like the most likely cause, but it wasn't.

Is there any way I can mute those control center clicks without putting my phone on silent?

Can Apple TV be used as a thin client?

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:26 PM PDT

I have a MBP which half of the time is used via a (4K Dell monitor & bluetooth apple keyboard & mouse) and half of the time is used on its own. The main use case is software development.

I'm considering buying an apple tv iff the following setup is possible.

Use the (4K monitor & apple tv & keyboard & mouse) as a thin client through which I remote-connect to the MBP, so that

  1. the MBP can lay anywhere in the flat (I have good wifi/ethernet infrastructure)
  2. I don't have to plug-in the DP/HDMI cables every time I sit to the desk

Is this doable?

Time machine backup stops when computer sleeps/logs out [closed]

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:21 PM PDT

The Time machine backup stops when I think my computer automatically goes to sleep as it does every few minutes. It goes back to the login screen. After I log back in the back up has stopped and the external disk ejected . There is an error message saying something along the lines that the disk was improperly ejected.

Ethernet is connected but no internet access in MacOS

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 11:38 PM PDT

I am working on iMac Retina 4K 2017 with macOS Big Sur v.11.2.1.

The Ethernet is connected to the iMac but unfortunately no internet access.

I've tried these approaches:

  1. I've created new location and add Ethernet with Configure IPv4 is Using DHCP.
  2. I've tried Renew DHCP Lease.
  3. I've tried to Configure IPv4 Manually and add Google DNS Server as my DNS Server.
  4. I've re-plugged in the ethernet cable.
  5. I've restart the iMac either before or after above configuration.
  6. I've unchecked all Proxies.
  7. Router has been restarted.
  8. Etc. (i don't remember the others).

All the above approaches doesn't work at all.

I plugged in my cable on Windows PC and it worked beautifully! But unfortunately doesn't works in this iMac.

How to solve this ?

How to script Network Preferences using the CLI

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:15 PM PDT

As the title implies for development I enable/disable Web proxies, however doing it through the UI is slow and cumbersome its also pretty inflexible.

I'm looking to control the following checked settings:

Advanced Network Settings

I tried using the following script to identify any changes but it did not work:

defaults read > current-defaults.txt # Do change in UI and then run the following: defaults read > changed-defaults.txt diff current-defaults.txt changed-defaults.txt

This answer has information but is not as specific to solve solve my needs

How to view javascript console logs within a Ionic App WKWebView using Safari (or other tool)

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:13 PM PDT

I am faced with a dilemma. I have an iOS/Android built using ionic 5 (using Cordova tools). We are using the cordova-plugin-ionic-webview plugin. I am trying to access the WebViews on the app, so I can view the underlying javascript in the console.

However, when I use Safari developer, nothing is showing up under my phone's menu.

Preconditions:

  • Safari -> Advanced -> Web Inspector enabled (iOS 14.4.2 - latest as of this writing)
  • Xcode Version 12.0 (12A7209)

Steps I followed:

Building the app using Xcode (debug mode only, using Adhoc license) Installing the app on my phone using Apple Configurator 2 (AC2) Launching latest Safari 14.03 -> Develop -> my phone -> says "No Inspectable Applications" NEXT launched Safari Technology Preview (Release 123 (Safari 14.2, WebKit 16612.1.7.10)) -> Develop -> my phone -> says "No Inspectable Applications" I don't know what else to do.

In short, how do I view the javascript console logs from my app? Is there something I am missing?

Restore Time Machine backup from Mac Mini to Mac Pro?

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:22 PM PDT

I need to restore a TM backup from my old Mac Mini to my new (new to me) Mac Pro 5.1 tower. Do I really have to remove the drive from the Mac Mini? It's a pain, so I'd prefer to keep the drive in the Mac Mini if I can. Can I use?

  • Target disk mode?
  • Copy over the network?

Edit: Migration Assistant is failing on the Mac Mini - it just immediately logs me out when I try to connect to the MP. Any ideas? The MM is on High Sierra, the MP is on Mojave. Both on a flat LAN beside each other, no firewall or anything.

Facetime audio calls not working using iPhone

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:45 PM PDT

I have a Netgear Nighthawk MR60 mesh system with a WiFi router and one satellite. Since I installed it, I cannot make calls using my iPhone xs with either of my Mac computers. The window comes up telling me I'm using Facetime audio with my iPhone, but I immediately get a message in the window saying that the phone and the computer must be connected to the same WiFi network in order to complete the call. Repeated attempts at this have failed.

It looks like everything is set up on all Apple devices for this to work.

On my Nighthawk app, all 3 devices show up on my 5 GHz network.

This worked with the former WiFi router I had and replaced. It was not a mesh system. That router had the ability to connect to either the 2.5 GHz or the 5 GHz network manually. Apparently, the Nighthawk does not have the manual connection option.

I've tried logging out of and back into Facetime to no avail.

On the Apple sight I can only find older similar questions - nothing recent except what I posted there.

Any help is welcome and appreciated.

Homebrew says I got the latest version of Emacs installed, but the emacs command indicates it's still the old version

Posted: 07 Apr 2021 12:08 AM PDT

I updated my emacs version using Homebrew. If I now execute

brew upgrade emacs

the following message appears:

emacs 27.2 already installed

However, when I execute

emacs --version

the following message appears:

P.S. There's a similar post on this forum, but the answer to it isn't relevant to me.

Messages sent to which number if iCloud message turned on

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:17 PM PDT

I have two phones with different phone numbers (A&B) and I turned on iCloud messages and Text Message Forwarding.

When a message is sent to number A or B, both phones received it. For example, when a message is sent to number A, phone A will automatically forward it to phone B so that both phones appeared to receive the message at the same time.

I want to know whether that message is actually sending to number A or number B in the first place. How can I do this?

How to view and delete Mac download history

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:27 PM PDT

Yesterday I was told that every computer keeps track of everything you have ever downloaded.

My computer is a 2014 iMac that is running macOS v10.13 (High Sierra), so I went to apple.com and tried to find the info I need, but all of the information I could find was about seeing your purchase history for the App Store and iTunes store, or about re-downloading content from Apple or about featured downloads.

Does my iMac in fact have a record of everything I've downloaded? If it does, how can I view it? And can I delete that record if I want to?

Big Sur Add trusted certificate via command line (Safari Can't establish a secure connection)

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:36 PM PDT

I am trying to have Safari stop preventing me from visiting one of my dev machines with an invalid cert.

I am trying to use the solution in this thread but install it using the CLI:

   security add-trusted-cert -r trustRoot -k ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db /tmp/test.cert

I am still receiving the "Safari Can't Open the Page because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server" error.

I want it to be applied to the user so I don't want to do the -d flag. And I know I am correctly downloading the cert because if I add the certificate and trust it through the OSX GUI, it works fine.

Another interesting note is that this solution works for my Brave and Firefox browsers, so it's just Safari that is giving me grief, but even safari works when I add the downloaded cert via the GUI.

why is the .HEIC suffix sometimes uppercase and sometimes lowercase

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 01:06 PM PDT

I just took five pictures on an iPhone 11 and then Airdropped them to my Mac Mini. I noticed that every other image has the file extension .HEIC in uppercase.

I am pretty sure that I have noticed this before, only just today thought to ask about it. Does anyone have any idea why this might be?

Only Transmission traffic through VPN

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I would like to use my favourite torrent client, Transmission, over a VPN service but at the same time I do not want to direct any other traffic therethrough. That is, I want to use my VPN service only for torrenting with the Transmission client.

I intend to use NordVPN service and I am coming across 2 problems:

  1. NordVPN offers IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols on Mac and I'm not sure whether and how I can connect to this VPN so that NOT all traffic is directed therethrough. As for the IKEv2 settings in Mac's Network Preferences, there is no "Send all traffic over VPN connection" option to keep unchecked, like it is for L2TP VPN protocol on Mac. As for the OpenVPN protocol, I'm not sure if this is possible with Tunnelblick for example or other client.
  2. Let's say I solve the first problem and I'm connected to the VPN service without sending all the traffic therethrough. How can I now make Transmission to use that specific network interface whereon I'm connected to the VPN?

I searched Google and I have found some procedures/methods but I am none the wiser thereon. E.g.:

  1. Transmission Interface Binder - this one seems outdated

  2. docker-transmission-openvpn - could be working but I am totally lost hereon.

  3. For Ubuntu, but perhaps could be employed on Mac too but I have no idea on what they talk about there

  4. Ditto

I should appreciate some advice from the more experienced or knowledgeable hereabout.

Big Sur 11.2 keeps forgetting Location Permission for Chrome

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:15 PM PDT

Seemingly every week Chrome will lose it's location permission and require me to re-check its box in the Privacy settings. Did I do something to make the exception temporary? Does it reset when Chrome updates? Can I say I permanently trust it?

Bandwidth throttling / simulation for selected host

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:02 PM PDT

I can control the network for the whole device with Network Link Conditioner but is there a way to do it just for selected hosts? I know that with /etc/hosts I can totally block connection to a host, but it's not what I need here. As a minimum solution, if I were able to make a host never respond, but just keeps loading forever, it would work, too.

Shrinking a Core Storage volume without the booter partition

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 10:06 PM PDT

I have a 14 TB external drive containing a single 14 TB HFS+ encrypted partition (besides EFI). I cannot resize this partition to add a new one. When I tried using either Disk Utility or diskutil, it says

You can't perform this resize unless it has a booter (target partition is probably too small)

Essentially I am having the same issue as described in this question: Can't resize partition: "You can't perform this resize unless it has a booter"

However, the answer to that question does not work for my scenario because there is no unallocated space after the single partition and I cannot manually add the booter using gdisk or gpt because of that.

My question is,

  • is there other ways to shrink this partition, besides moving everything out and reformatting it. Or,
  • how do I add in the required booter partition (so that I can resize normally using Disk Utility)?

Note that this is a Core Storage volume because it is encrypted.

  • I had the idea of forcibly creating a new GPT table where there is enough space for the booter, but I haven't done that because I don't know how that would affect the existing partition.
  • I also tried using diskutil cs resizeVolume, which will resize the inner Logical Volume, and then I could add another Logical Volume after it. The problem is that these two volumes will then share the same encryption key AFAIK, which is not desirable.

FYI, here are all the things that have happened that put me in this situation:

  • This is a brand new 14 TB hard drive. I originally formatted it into two partitions: one 10TB and one 4TB. Both were HFS+ journaled encrypted (so they were Core Storage volumes).

  • Later, I attempted to resize them into 12TB/2TB using Disk Utility, which failed miserably.

  • After this, the second 4TB partition could not be found, and the first one could not be mounted. This was reported by diskutil cs info about the first partition (originally 10TB):

    |  +-- Logical Volume Group 69E42F2B-A2E4-41EC-93A9-4D62C0C9082B  |   =========================================================  |   Name:         -none-  |   Status:       Initializing  |   Size:         0 B (0 B)  |   Free Space:   -none-  |   |  |   +-< Physical Volume 4BBFE85D-06C3-4285-98D9-D6D30E3E4031  |       ----------------------------------------------------  |       Index:    0  |       Disk:     disk2s2  |       Status:   Failed  |       Size:     14000175669248 B (14.0 TB)
  • However, I managed to completely recover the first partition (filesystem intact and fsck passed), by destroying and recreating the GPT table, in which the first partition occupies the entire disk — that is, the end of the partition is now right before the secondary GPT. Now the GPT looks like this:

          start size index contents 0 1 PMBR 1 1 Pri GPT header 2 32 Pri GPT table 34 6 40 409600 1 GPT part - C12A7328-F81F-11D2-BA4B-00A0C93EC93B 409640 27344355255 2 GPT part - 53746F72-6167-11AA-AA11-00306543ECAC 27344764895 32 Sec GPT table 27344764927 1 Sec GPT header
  • And now I cannot resize the 14TB partition.

MBP built in keyboard unresponsive until complete shutdown

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 05:04 PM PDT

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), running macOS Catalina 10.15.5.

Sometimes while working, the built-in keyboard becomes completely unresponsive, the only button that works is the power button. Logging-off, sleeping etc. does nothing, only shut down and fresh boot (with the chime) removes the issue.

While the issue is happening, the Caps Lock light is turned on.

Touchpad works fine, and plugging external USB keyboard also works (but doesn't unlock the built-in keyboard).

Mouse Keys, all this stuff is turned off.

I noticed, but have no proof, that this happens when I'm pressing various left-side modifier keys: shift, alt, ctrl, cmd, tab.

Is this a hardware issue? A software issue? A hidden shortcut? Is there some kind of logging that can be turned on to watch for this kind of things?

Creating High Sierra as VM under VMware Fusion

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:12 PM PDT

I need to create a VM for macOS High Sierra to run with VMware Fusion. I would prefer this VM be created from my existing MacBook running High Sierra (a real, physical device), but that's not essential.

I have a current version (v 11.5.5) of VMware Fusion on my new-ish MacBook running Catalina - this is where I'd like to run my High Sierra VM. The MacBook running High Sierra also has VMware Fusion, but it's an old copy that can't be updated any longer.

What I've done so far:

  1. I have read this Q&A which is related to my question.

  2. I have contacted VMware technical support, asking basically the same question: How can I create a VM of my MacBook running High Sierra?

  3. I have attempted to create a .dmg file of the HD in my High Sierra Mac using CCC

Results & observations:

  1. For reasons I don't understand, my physical MacBook running High Sierra does not have a Recovery partition - perhaps it was not picked up during a previous upgrade to the HDD/SSD. Consequently, that option seems to be unavailable?

I d/l a file named macOSUpdCombo10.13.6.dmg from an Apple support site (don't recall the URL). However, when opening that file in VMware Fusion, instead of High Sierra, I get what appears to be an installation procedure. It was not clear where this was going to be installed, so I abandoned it. Has anyone else used this file to create a High Sierra VM under VMware Fusion?

This Q&A has a link to a utility named create_macos_vm_install_dmg which claims to "prepare macOS installer disk images for use with ... VMware Fusion...". I have not tried this utility, but am willing to try it - however I would much prefer to hear from someone who has used it successfully before I do. Will this utility create a (dmg) file that VMware Fusion can open and run a macOS High Sierra VM?

  2. VMware tech support advised of availability of a suitable file at this location (hackintosh?). Before they sent me the link, the VMware tech support person asked me to recite a disclaimer during our phone conversation. This made me a little nervous... when I visited the site, I got a little more nervous :) Has anyone used VM files from this source - are they OK?

  3. I've tried to create a .dmg backup file using CCC. That has been particularly confusing - partly because it seems to have wrecked the network drive location where Time Machine keeps backups for my MacBook running Catalina. I'm afraid I am just not smart enough to use CCC.

How Should I Proceed?

I'm probably a little frustrated at this point. My experience with cloning machines in VMware was 3-4 years ago in a MS Windows environment - it was dead simple - literally a one-or-two-mouse-click operation. And I've used VMware quite a bit in a Mac environment, but recently that's been limited to virtualization of Linux OS... also dead simple to do.

All that aside, I need to get this (virtualization of macOS High Sierra) done for a number of reasons. All help will be appreciated.

MacBook Pro 2017 daisy-chaining with DisplayPort [duplicate]

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 10:49 PM PDT

I have a 2017 13" MacBook Pro (with two USB-C ports) with Mojave and wish to use it to daisy-chain a display to two external monitors through DisplayPort.

Unfortunately, it seems that although the hardware supports this, MacOS itself does not support multi-stream transport - the two monitors in the chain are mirroring their display with no option to extend instead.

Is there any third party driver or other software available to make this work as intended in MacOS? If not, what would be the best alternate solution to get it working? Ideally, I'd like to avoid buying a separate £200 dock to be able to use multiple monitors and still power the MacBook as well.

The monitors in question are Dell U2515h if that helps - they support daisy chaining through DisplayPort 1.2, although ideally, I'd also like to be able to chain to another monitor too.

Can an eMac boot from a USB optical drive connected via a FireWire adapter?

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:17 PM PDT

I've got an eMac that's mostly working (running Tiger, plus a selection of other nice software), but has a broken optical drive. I have a spare USB optical drive lying around, and it works for most purposes, but, according to this discussion on the Ars Technica OpenForum, most PowerPC Macs (including eMacs) can't boot from USB drives (at least not out of the box and without a LOT of tinkering and swearing), although they can boot from FireWire drives.

Just in case I ever have to reinstall Mac OS X on the eMac, here's my question: if I plug a USB-to-FireWire adapter into one of the eMac's FireWire ports, and plug the USB optical drive into that, will the eMac be able to boot from said optical drive, or will I have to shell out for a FireWire optical drive?

iMac says that macOS High Sierra is installed but is still running Mavericks

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 08:11 PM PDT

Recently I have downloaded and installed macOS High Sierra. Downloading went well, installing went well, no problems during that process. Only when my iMac started back up I saw nothing new. It looked like it didn't install anything at all. So when I checked which OS it was running it said 10.9.5 (Mavericks).

I thought it might have been an error and I tried to reinstall the new OS. However, when I wanted to download the installer again in the Mac App Store, it said that it the OS had already been installed.

And so began my search on the internet to find a solution. I came across a post on the Apple Support Forum. It said that I should look in my applications folder to see if I still have the installer. Fortunately this was the case. Only when I ran the installer it told me that it had failed to download the necessary information from the installer. In other words: it could not run the installer.

Maybe something interesting I found online; I came across this reply from deontaifromroseville on the forum. Here's the most important part:

Listen... I have been at this computer all day and night. Starting at 10:30a on 1/16/2018. If you see the downloaded or installed on Sierra in the App Store WITH A GRAY TAB YOU CAN NOT CLICK. It is because you have DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED.

OPEN APPLICATION. CLICK ON LAUNCH PAD. YOUR INSTALL SCREEN OF SIERRA WILL POP UP AFTER.

However, the solution he found did not work for me. But it's still interesting because I have successfully gone through the entire installation process. Maybe it is installed but there is something else at play?

So, I still have not been able to get the latest macOS. Does anyone know more about this problem? Has anyone else experienced this same issue? Is there a solution? All information is helpful.

Install old version of Homebrew on Snow Leopard

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:20 PM PDT

So I have a computer that is stuck on Snow Leopard.

How do I install Homebrew on such a old computer? Is this even possible?

I tried the following command:

/usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

However this gives me an error about needing git and I don't know how to install an old version of that.

How can I script the setup of preferences in Mac OS X?

Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:36 PM PDT

I have a couple of Macs and I would like to create some kind of script that I can use to:

  1. Easily setup a new Mac after a reinstall
  2. Update settings to consistent values (so if I decide to change some preferences on Mac A, I can run the script on Mac B to get it to match)

I'd be happy if I could use this script to customize:

  • System Preferences
  • Finder Preferences

I would prefer a method where I can use a script or config file to specifically set certain settings I choose to certain values. I don't really want something that will import/export ALL settings indiscriminately.

I also don't want some complicated IT management solution, since this is really just for me.

I'm really new to Mac OSX and UNIX based systems. I wanted to run a few Windows games on my Mac Mini so I started installing Wine and MacPorts.

I think the installs are correct, but when I type sudo port install wine I see a not found error in my terminal. I tried other basic commands like say and clear and all of them return the same not found error.

My research shows that my PATH might be incorrectly set, but it lacks steps I can implement.

Specifically, I ran this command: echo $PATH and it returned:

/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/opt/local/bin

I'm a complete newbie to mac and have no idea where .bash_profile or any of those files are. My skills let me install Xcode and the Command Line tools for Xcode and I sense I need to level up on path management.

At this point I need help managing my dot files and changing my path to fix these specific errors on Mountain Lion.

What are my next steps?
