What to do with water-damaged touchscreen on ipod touch nano?

Eight years ago I was gifted an ipod touch nano (generation 7, A1446). A few days later, I forgot it in my shirt, which went through a regular washing machine cycle. Surprisingly, the ipod still works: It charges the battery, it displays icons and streams music - but the touchscreen doesn't react at all. I just found it in a forgotten drawer when house cleaning.

Can the screen be repaired, preferably by someone who is fearless but has very moderate hardware and repair skills?

Or is there any other way than touch by which I can operate the device?

"Add printer" (from network) fails silently (Catalina 10.15.7 (19H2))

When going through the usual steps, my network printer shows up via Bonjour Sharing, but when I double click it and it shows a progress bar, it completes but the list is still empty.

It's an HP office jet 3830. What's strange is when I add the device's "Fax" driver, it works fine. Just the printer doesn't work.

What could be wrong?

Very strange green artifacts in Google Chrome?

I have no idea what this is, restarting chrome and my machine doesn't fix it, it seems random and it affects things randomly, and goes away randomly.

Notice this issue comes up with I take the macOS screenshot too. I think it must be a bug with Chrome, not sure if it's my laptop or macOS too?

Not sure how to google for this either, it's a big mystery, and makes a lot of pages unusable unless I'm fortunate enough for it to just go away

New Cookie Dialog on SE Websites, iPhone only [migrated]

iPhone SE (first generation), iOS 14.4.2 (18D70), iOS Safari

I have regularly used this phone to browse the SE sites in which I'm interested: Travel, Expatriates, Mechanics, Home Improvement, and Ask Different. The phone's now running 14.4.2; over the past months I've updated it promptly as new versions are offered. Keychain takes care of my passwords, and all seemed good.

Today, however, when I navigate to any of these SE sites, I'm confronted with this:

Nothing has changed in the phone's settings, cookies are not blocked. Under the dialog, I am already logged in. Even odder, when I click on "Customize settings" there's a brief rotating wheel symbol, followed by...nothing: the dialog remains in place, blocking the page. I can only get rid of the dialog by clicking "Accept all cookies." The same thing happens on all five SE sites. It isn't happening on my desktop machine.

Restarting (both regular and forced) has no effect, the dialog keeps appearing. And the dialog is persistent — it appears every time the phone loads an SE site.

What's going on here?

Cannot boot into macOS

A while ago, I installed Ubuntu along with the macOS on my MacBook. Yesterday, I decided I should uninstall Ubuntu. I read a post on how to uninstall Ubuntu. What I did was, in Disk Utility on macOS I tried to delete the partitions. There were:

  1. Apple partition
  2. Ubuntu partition
  3. Swap memory 8GB

After deleting, I saw that only swap was deleted but the Ubuntu partition was there. I worked normally on my MacBook for the day and shut the lid off when I slept. In the morning, I opened the MacBook and it booted into Ubuntu. Now I am not able to boot into MacBook as I used to earlier by holding the option key during boot. There is no macOS HD during boot. And neither can I see anything on rEFIND boot management.

How to use pinch to rotate using keyboard/mouse (without trackpad)?

I'm trying to rotate texts and images in Preview without using the multitouch 'rotate with two fingers'. It works fine with a laptop trackpad but on a desktop with only a keyboard and mouse I can't find a way to rotate things.

edit: I'm using the LogitechMX Master, but what I was hoping there was a solution just using right/left click and the keyboard, or some setting in Preview. Basically any way of doing it that doesn't require the use of the trackpad.

OSX cmd+tab behavior with multiple windows of same application and monitors

First of all, my question is not answered in any of the questions with the similar titles. My context is a little different.

I have 2 monitors connected to my MacBook Pro. I opened 2 windows of Safari, one for each monitor.

  • On 1st monitor, there's a Safari window and Application A.

  • On 2nd monitor, there's the 2nd Safari window and Application B.

  • 2nd monitor is focused on Application B.

  • 1st monitor is focused on Application A.

  • On the 1st monitor, I switch from Application A to Safari using cmd+tab and 1st monitor successfully focuses on it's own Safari window.

  • But 2nd monitor also switches to it's own Safari windows instead of keeping the Application B on the screen.

How can I prevent this from happening so 2nd monitor doesn't switch to Safari as well and instead keep it's application on its screen?

I already tried all the combinations from Mission Control page but none of them helped me achieve this. Or maybe they didn't work as they intended to be, I'm not sure if that's the case.

Use terminal to get Mac battery manufacture date/age

How do I get the manufacture date or age like what's shown in CoconutBattery using the terminal? I tried ioreg -cr AppleSmartBattery which gave a ManufacturerData (data, not date, but it was a date format) that's way too old to be correct for my computer. system_profiler SPPowerDataType doesn't show anything related to what I want.

EDIT: there is a ManufactureDate line in ioreg, but it's a 5 digit number – how do I decode that?

Playing audio over bluetooth from some sources mutes others

When I play audio through bluetooth headphones, the following happens:

  • Play the Google timer in Chrome or playback from Logic Pro X. Works fine.
  • Play a YouTube video or Spotify song. Stop it.
  • Go back to Google time or Logic Pro. Now there's no sound.
  • YouTube and Spotify have no issue, I can play one first then the other.

When I'm playing over the computer speakers this does not occur. I can go back and forth between YouTube/Spotify and Logic/timer.

Thank you for your help. I'm on Big Sur 11.2.3 but I've faced this issue over multiple OS versions.

How to copy link in Google Docs app?

I've got the Google Docs app installed on my iPad. There is a link in this doc and I need to copy the URL to the URL field in a calendar event. However, I can't figure out how to do this.

I have tried long tapping on the link. This gives me the choices "Open Link", "Edit Link", "Remove Link", "Cut", "Copy", "Paste", and "Add Comment". The "Copy" choice copies the text, not the URL of the link. The "Open Link" option opens the link the Google Sheets app, which does not seem to provide a way to find the URL of the page that is open. The "Edit Link" brings up a dialog containing a text field with the "Link" but I can't figure out how to copy it. I can tap to move the cursor, but I can't bring up any sort of menu to copy or even select part of the URL either by tapping or long pressing.

How can I copy this link so I can paste it into the Calendar URL field?

Whats the difference between backing up my photos on iPhone and storing them in iCloud?

If I go to settings -> iCloud -> manage storage There are 2 categories:

  1. Backups (118 GB)
  2. Photos (18.3 GB)

In my backups, there's photo library (109.25 GB)

I'm confused, what's the difference between storing my photos in iCloud and backing them up then storing them in iCloud.

What happens if I click on " turn off and delete" the backup for my photo library?

How can I show seconds on macOS BigSur's menu bar clock?

I work in an environment where seconds are critical.

Is there a way to display the time with seconds in the menu bar on macOS Big Sur? More specifically, I am referring to the Date and Time at top right in the menu bar which users can click on to open the Notification Centre.

The instructions I find on the Internet seem to pertain to older macOS versions, and are no longer applicable.

Why I do I see these lines in Terminal and how can I remove them?

This started to appear at the start of the terminal when i installed homebrew and don't know how to remove it. Any tip.

Cannot access directories over SMB (permissions error)

I am unable to access directories like ~/Documents, ~/Downloads, or ~/Desktop via SMB — the SB share on which they exist can be accessed, but not the directories themselves (trying to browse them gives permissions errors)

In Console.app, I have (for kernel), e.g.,

System Policy: smbd(7706) deny(1) file-read-data /Users/alex/Documents

This appears when I try to access ~/Documents.

How can I fix this so ~/Documents and similar dirs are accessible via SMB?

Can't find AutoUnattend.xml?

I have followed this link https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/316512/408833 in order to download Windows, and I have reached the part where I need to edit the AutoUnattend file, however I can't seem to find it on my USB. I've tried redownloading the support software and the iso file but still nothing (also tried the terminal command, says the file doesn't exist). Any help?

However, when I try to resize my container disk0s2 by:

"No device connected" for Wacom One tablet

I have a Wacom One attached via mini-USB to my macbook pro 2020 running Catalina. This device is still supported under Catalina / macOS 10.15:

The Wacom driver was successfully installed and can be seen as running via Activity Monitor :

What else should I check/do ?

Update I rebooted with the Wacom One connected but still get the "No Device Connected" fro the Desktop Center.

Is there a known issue with MacBooks and bluetooth occasionally restarting?

During the last 4 years I've had 3 different MacBooks (one personal, two from different jobs) that had the same issue: bluetooth randomly dropped all connections. I typically have a bluetooth keyboard, mouse and headphones connected but headphones are typically optional.

If it happened with one machine, I would blame myself for messing something up or maybe faulty hardware in that particular unit. However, this is my third macbook that's suffering from the exact same issue. Bluetooth either comes back after a few minutes or I restart the thing manually. It's a bit annoying during conference calls.

Is this by any means a known issue and something I could do anything about?

When printing *photos to the Canon TS960 printer from iPhone or iPad using AirPrint, the printer thinks the print job is a CD label and asks me to 'Place a printable disk on the multi-purpose tray'. How can I fix this?

*Printing anything but photos works normally. Also, the issue is specific to iOS devices and doesn't happen when printing photos from my MacBook.

iPhone XR's screen triggers other devices

Recently I bought a brand new iPhone XR. When its screen is activated by some application (not necessarily a GSM call or a Wi-Fi thing), it affects other speakers or headphones around it. All of them sounds exact same 4 "buff" like sounds consecutively. It reminds me of the way old mobile phones affected the speakers around them. Is there anyone knows why it happens and how to prevent it? It annoys me and I really need a solution.

MacBook Pro stuck on GRUB minimal Bash at startup

I had a dual boot Linux Mint 19 and macOS on my MacBookPro11,2. Since the CPU was overheating with Linux, I decided today to delete the Linux partition. Little problem, when I start my MacBook Pro now, I just have this menu on startup:

"GNU Grub version 2.02 - Minimal BASH-Like line editing is supported grub>"

If I type ls, this is what I get:

What could I do to boot into macOS?

MacBook Pro (2018) stopped detecting external monitor

My new MacBook Pro suddenly stopped recognizing external monitor (Dell U2515H) after 2 days of normal usage.

Yesterday, after I was done with my work, I closed the lid as usual and today, I opened the MacBook and the external monitor didn't get detected.

The monitor is connected via USB-C -> HDMI cable (cost about 20$).

I have already tried restarting my mac, reconnecting the monitor and detect monitors in system preferences. I have also tried reseting SMC and NVRAM. Unfortunately none of it worked.

Detailed info:

  • MacBook Pro (2018) - 15", i7
  • Mac OS High Sierra - 10.13.6
  • USB-C to HDMI cable
  • Monitor: Dell U2515H

Any help is highly appreciated as I really need my external monitor for work.

I am using the "Preview" application for reading a PDF file on a MacBook Pro. Is there any way in I can read it in dark mode?

You can do it in Adobe Acrobat Reader by changing background and text color, but can "Preview" do that too?

Open Finder Tabs with Automator?

I'd like to say that the problem I want to solve is pretty simple, but I can't seem to find any good resources to tackle it.

I'd like to have an Automator application that will open all of my SMB/network shares (these are constant, but are sometimes not mounted) in a single window in multiple tabs. I can't seem to find any way to do it because Automator doesn't seem to address Finder tabs at all.

Any thoughts?
