Can MBP 16 inch(Late 2019) retina screen can be replaced with non retina screen(not apple)?is it possible?what problems i might face i do that?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 11:15 PM PDT

Actually, I am getting some lines on one end of the screen I went to aptronix(Apple retailer in India) customer care they are saying its pressure damage; I have never dropped or got hit accidentally, but there some little scratches from normal usage they mostly likely do not want to cover me under warranty so I am searching for alternate options. I wanted to replace my retina screen will a non-retina display like some UHD screen or any other screen.

Store matching files in icloud AND on Mac and Macbook

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I signed up for iCloud storage for added security (in case my local computers crash or are stolen), but am finding out iCloud is trying to only keep certain frequently used files also on my Mac (running 10.13.6) and Macbook Pro (running 11.1).
Is there a way to force iCloud to keep all files at all times current in both iCloud and on my local machines (that have plenty of available storage space), so then when/if I lose internet, power goes out, or iCloud gets hacked and everything gets deleted/corrupted, I will always have safe and complete versions on my computers? Thanks!

stopped (err = -3253) iTunes

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 06:12 PM PDT

iTunes error message when downloading music stopped (err = -3253) the network connection was reset. this message will pop up once or twice before it will download the song. It will eventually download the content, after I've cycled through the same error message a couple of times. Been on the phone with apple support for 3+ hours with no success in fixing this annoying error message. Running McAfee anti-virus, disabled McAfee and same error occurs. Any advice, anyone else get this error??? or is it apple being dicks to windows users again...

Parallels VM: Is there a way to run a script on the host when launching a VM?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

My Parallels VM is configured to use some network services on the host mac via the virtual network, but as the virtual network is not up when the mac host's services are started at boot they aren't listening on the virtual interface and the VM can't connect to them. After starting the VM I have to remember to manually restart those services on the mac host so that they are listening on the virtual network. It's annoying when I forget to do so...

I'd like to automate this process if possible. Is there any way to configure Parallels to run a shell script on the host after a VM is started and the virtual network is up? (Suggestions for how to run a startup script on the guest VM are not germane.)

How to stop asr restore remounting image after completion? Or at east stop the Finder window appearing?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 05:54 PM PDT

I'm making a bash script and I need to run a asr restore command in it, but it automatically re-mounts the image after it's finished.

This produces a Finder window that could trick someone into thinking the process is completed when it is in fact not completed.

How do I prevent this window from appearing? (And no, I can't use bless because it's a read-only filesystem.)

Why is my iMac slowing down under multiple users?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 02:55 PM PDT

Hardware: I have a 2014 iMac 5K. It's got 24GB of RAM and a 2TB SATA SSD I installed myself last summer. Full specs here: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP707?locale=en_US

Software: Catalina 10.15.7 is installed. I have a total of three user accounts set up: one for my wife, and two for me (one for home, one for work). Her account is signed in under her Apple ID, my two accounts are both signed in under my Apple ID.

The Problem: When I first boot up the machine, it runs perfectly. Boots up very fast, accounts log in fast, everything runs quite smoothly. I use it for basic web stuff, email, iMessage, some Creative Cloud work, text-based work. All of this works very well, even more demanding stuff like Final Cut Pro and transcoding the occasional video.

But over a period of 3 or 4 days, even under very light use, things just get slower and slower. When I say "things" I mean specifically graphics on screen -- Mission Control and Fast User Switching become incredibly slow. Windows respond slower and slower to resize, lagging behind the cursor as if the machine is struggling to draw the graphics. When it gets bad enough, it can't even keep up with highlighting text in some apps and in web pages. If I log out of other accounts and pare it down to one, it seems to relieve the pressure a bit, but if I keep logging in and out of user accounts without restarting, it just slows down more and more over a few days until, again, it's basically unusable. Eventually I just have to restart -- at least once a week and sometimes more than that. Then it's very fast again until a few days later.

In all of this, Activity Monitor looks basically normal as far as I can tell. The only thing that stands out is WindowServer, which will spike up 70-100% and not really settle down much below 50%. But the fans never go crazy, the CPU load never looks bad, the memory pressure stays low (again, there's 24GB of RAM).

This issue has been with me for a couple of years now. I hoped that pulling out the Fusion Drive and replacing it with a pure SSD would help, but no such luck. I hoped Catalina would solve it, but not at all. What's so vexing about this is that this iMac runs SO well when I first restart it, but I can't keep it working that way unless I were to (I guess) run a single user account which I don't want to do. I have worked with separate home and work Mac user accounts for probably 8 years now, and never had issues with it, even on much more modest hardware.

I would also add this: I'm seeing a similar problem on my 2020 MacBook Air under Big Sur. Multiple users + staying logged in for a while = the machine slows down over the course of a week or so. This makes me wonder if there's just some inherent bugginess in the way MacOS handles multiple users these days.

Even if nobody has a solution to this, I'd love to hear about it if anyone else is seeing multiple user issues in MacOS these days.

What iOS apps read health records from Apple Health?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 02:13 PM PDT

Apple's website says that "third-party apps can request access to your health records" but I can't find any apps in the app store that read them. Are there any apps that read health records (e.g., allergies, medications, or immunizations, lab results, etc.)?

I cannot find the Settings app:

recover data from FFFFF partition inside an external drive

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 06:17 PM PDT

A few weeks ago, I deleted my Linux partition of my Mac because I was running out of space. After that, I couldn't boot my OS anymore. Because I depend on my computer to work, I decided to backup my whole volume as it was to an external drive and format my Mac.

Now with my Mac working, once I mount my volume backup from the external drive, I can see something like below:

bash-3.2$ diskutil list /dev/disk0 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *251.0 GB disk0 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1 2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 250.8 GB disk0s2 /dev/disk1 (synthesized): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: APFS Container Scheme - +250.8 GB disk1 Physical Store disk0s2 1: APFS Volume Macintosh HD - Data 74.4 GB disk1s1 2: APFS Volume Preboot 325.8 MB disk1s2 3: APFS Volume Recovery 613.8 MB disk1s3 4: APFS Volume VM 1.1 MB disk1s4 5: APFS Volume Macintosh HD 15.1 GB disk1s5 6: APFS Snapshot com.apple.os.update-... 15.1 GB disk1s5s1 /dev/disk2 (external, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: FDisk_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk2 1: Apple_HFS Seagate Expansi 1.0 TB disk2s1 /dev/disk3 (disk image): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme +251.0 GB disk3 1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk3s1 2: FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF 220.8 GB disk3s2 (free space) 30.0 GB -

How do I save Text to Audio? (Inexperienced with Terminal and Scripting) [closed]

I am trying to figure out how to pass text to audio files and I have to admit im very confused on the process. I have figured out how to use applescripts using say - commands but how do I pass it through terminal as an .mp3 or .aiff?

Is there an AppleScript or Automator service that can do this?

What is single user mode useful for?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 12:59 PM PDT

When and how does FileVault decrypt a SSD on a T2 Machine

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 12:51 PM PDT

Based on what the T2 chip, on user log in, decrypts a SSD with FileVault enabled? Bypassing the user password will result in a possible decryption of the SSD? As several years ago there where tools that bypassed the user password.

Around the web I have found:

Turn on FileVault, however, and a T2-equipped Mac engages in the same boot behavior as one that handles disk encryption in software. Instead of loading macOS directly, the Recovery partition boots in a special mode that requires entry of the password of any account allowed to use FileVault. Until that password is entered, the disk's contents remain encrypted just as if it were at rest.

From this we can understand that logging into your mac user - an user that is approved by the T2 to unlock the drive on which FileVault is enabled - is enough to decrypt the drive. From this the question, bypassing the user password using some sort of tool will decrypt the drive?

I am curious because prior to the T2, depending on your configuration you could end with two password requests at log in:

  • One for the user
  • One to decrypt the drive

That seemed a much stronger and secure approach.

Using MacBook Pro 13' (2019) in lower resolution in Windows (1280x800)

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 03:47 PM PDT

I know the native resolution for MacBook Pro 2019 is 2560x1600. Using this resolution makes everything very small in Windows 10 and its needed to use scales (for example 200x). Another solution for this could be using a lower resolution.

Using 1280x800 seems perfect because it is exactly half in each dimension and it is expected that it does not need any adjustment because each four pixel maps to one pixel in this resolution.

But it seems there is a problem in the firmware of the LCD controller of the MacBook that makes the screen blurred in this resolution.

MacBook Air 2017 to Dell Docking Station D6000

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 05:58 PM PDT

I am trying to connect my MacBook Air 2017 which has a Thunderbolt 2 port, to Dell Docking Station D6000 that has a Type-C plug.
I am able to connect Dell Latitude 7410 with Dell Docking Station D6000 since it has a Thunderbolt 3 port adapter. Is there any way that my MacBook Air 2017's Thunderbolt 2 port could act as a Thunderbolt 3 adapter?

Option Shift word selection doesn't work in Visual Studio Code on Mac OS Big Sur

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 12:07 AM PDT

I can't exectly say when this started, but from some version of Visual Studio Code Option + Shift + Right Arrow/Left Arrow selection stopped working. Currently I use macOS Big Sur, but I am almost sure that this started before upgrading to Big Sur. Can anyone help me to fix this?
UPDATE: I use macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 and VS Code 1.53.2.
UPDATE 2: OPTION + SHIFT + UP/DOWN Arrow works for me, actually this shortcut adds one more cursor to other line.
UPDATE 3: This is not shortcut probelm: enter image description here

iPhone 11 failing to connect to 3g

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 10:01 PM PDT

For the first time in a long while I am to a location without any 4G or LTE - only 3G. Unfortunately, no matter what I do, I am failing to coax my iPhone 11 even as close as to receive/send any data over it including switching voice and data on the phone's secondary line (the one with a plan for roaming) to 3G. Text messages seem to go fine.

Here are my current data configuration:

main mobile data screen

secondary line data screen

Is there anything possibly wrong with the configurations that might be a quick fix? Is this a known issue?

macOS (Big Sur) Internet installation fails near the end

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Buying used mac mini 2018 I decided to do a clean system install to be sure that it is clean. I followed the steps from the Apple docs: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065

  1. signed out of everything
  2. reset NVRAM
  3. erased disk

then I followed the reinstallation procedure: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 Command-R failed with some 2008F error or something so after some reading and thinking I used Option-Command-R which should install the latest OS available and compatible and that installs Bug Sur.

First it says I will have to wait for some 40 min for the process to finish and everything seems to go fine, but then around 11 mins before the end some problems start and the installation is cancelled with a human error saying: An error occurred installing macOS. You can try again to complete the installation.

Of course I've tried not once not twice, always ends with the same message and in a similar way when checking the logs. And talking about logs I managed to copy them so if anyone can read something useful from them and recommend any action that could solve the issue - here they are: https://gist.github.com/piotrku/ae887b38ffcb25fad6810d3a7e4c5465

I'm using an Ethernet connection and the Internet connection is quite good (I event connected directly to the modem to bypass the router to be sure that no built in firewall causes the failure) and I tried on different hours for the past 3 days. I also read many pages describing similar problems but didn't found any real solutions.

Installing Bur Sur from USB fails (I think the same way as when installing from internet but fails). Installing Catalina from USB fails at the beginning with error 1008f. Doing Shift-Option-Command-R fails with some error like 1008f or 2008f at the globe stage beginning the process.

I don't know if there are any options left than sending it to Apple repair :(

[edit]

Is this disk erased enough to creat new volume and proceed with the installation? enter image description here

How to recover files from a Macbook that won't boot which has an SSD

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 04:02 PM PDT

My Macbook pro 2011 won't boot completely anymore (can't open it). In the recovery mode, I can see my disk (SSD) but when I want to download the last IOS on my mac, it seems my computer can't find my SSD.

Can anyone help me found out if my computer is retrievable and if not, is there a way I can recover my files from my SSD?

Thank you very much, Chloe

Windows installation through bootcamp and SSD error

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 05:39 PM PDT

I have a Macbook Pro 2017, and I've been trying to install Windows 10 on it for quite a while through Bootcamp, but I was advised to purchase an SSD (Samsung T7 500 GB). However, that also did not solve my issue. Every time I try to install Windows, the first time the Mac boots from the external startup disk, I am faced with a BSOD error saying 'your computer ran into an error, please restart'. I have tried multiple Windows 10 ISO's 1909, 1809, 1607, and the current version 20H2 available on Microsoft (30th October 2020). I also reset PRAM before every installation.

To install Windows, I followed this 9to5Mac tutorial, as well as the accepted answer to this question.

Can someone PLEASE HELP ME :(((

Outlook Display Change in High Sierra

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 06:02 PM PDT

When I click on an incoming message instead of enlarging to fill the screen as always has been the case, I now get a postcard sized enlargement of the message superimposed atop the Message List and the Preview Screen. How do I change the setting so a click on the message will go directly to enlarging the message to fill the screen?

Migration Assistant won’t copy (some) files, though running through smoothly without error

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 12:01 AM PDT

we're just migrating my wife's MacBook Pro to a new one, both most recent macOS versions via a TimeMachine backup. In the process all files are selected, Migration Assistenten on the new mac runs through smoothly without any errors. Except that it's a lot faster than expected, and faster than it first estimates to be. We're roughly talking about 200 Gb of data, it first estimates to take around 1:30 (h:min), but then finishes after just a couple of minutes. After rebooting the Pictures and Music folder for example are empty, haven't fully explored, what else might be missing. The missing data definitely is on the time machine backup.

Any ideas on what might have gone wrong here? Might try skipping the time machine backup and using Migration assistant directly Mac to Mac.

One more thought: old Mac used case-sensitive Apple File System, new Mac doesn't - might that be the source of the „error"? Thanks for your help!

How can I download an older version of OS X/macOS?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 08:10 PM PDT

Sometimes it's hard to search for older versions of macOS & OS X on the App Store.

This is an attempt to provide the canonical QA for this issue, as per the Meta QA -
Where is the list of canonical questions stored for Ask Different?
I expect it to be modified over time to hopefully become a complete information resource.

How can I get any older version of a Mac OS to be able to run as a VM, or to reinstall on my Mac?

Set different volume for phone and clock

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 03:24 PM PDT

On iOS, is there a way to set a different volume (loudness level) for the alarms I set in the 'Clock' app? I'd like to lower the volume for the alarm I use to wake up in the morning, but without lowering the volume for when I am on a call. Right now I have to remember to turn down the ringer volume setting each night, then turn it back up when I am talking on the phone.

Can this be done? I haven't found a way in the Settings app, but perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place.

Separate mouse and trackpad settings with Karabiner

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 01:58 PM PDT

This post (which is upvoted 26 times as of this writing) suggests using Karabiner to set separate scroll settings for a USB mouse and the laptop trackpad.

Karabiner seems to be a nice application, and I understand the suggested solution (don't remap trackpad settings, then reverse scroll settings on all pointing devices except previously excluded ones) but it doesn't work in my case because the USB mouse IS an Apple pointing device (it's an apple USB mouse).

There is an option "Don't remap an internal keyboard" but nothing about "internal trackpad". So really the question still stands; how to set different scrolling settings for the internal trackpad, and an external apple mouse?

Change location of macOS Notification Center alerts?

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 02:34 PM PDT

Is it possible to change where macOS Notification Center alerts appear on the screen?

They currently appear at the top right of the screen with the menu bar:

Notification Center alert at top right of screen, covering a browser window

Alerts appearing in the top right tend to cover up work I'm doing more often than not. They cover up browser tabs, toolbar icons, and window titles.

I would prefer, say, the bottom right corner of the screen.

If moving the alerts is not possible, is it possible to change the screen on which they appear?

Best way to merge mp4 files

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 05:58 PM PDT

Got a bunch of .mp4 videos (info shows H.264 Video + AAC Audio) that are chapters of a larger video.

I'd like to merge them, but not sure which is the best way. I don't have Quicktime Pro, but I'll get it if that's the best way to do this.

Edit: Just to clariify this is Mac OSX 10.6 I'm on.
