How can I export a list of files within a volume or folder?

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 12:00 AM PDT

I would like to export a list of files contained in a Volume into legible text, or a spreadsheet document that I can easily share.

Things I have tried so far that didn't work:

TextEdit: If I select all the folders on the volume, for example when the Finder window is presenting them in a column, then Copy then Paste into a Plain Text document, only the names of the folders will be copied, not the contents. I could present the folder in List format in the Finder window, but then I would have to manually open all the folders one by one before copying/pasting. Too time consuming.

TextWrangler: The output is ok, but I feel like I would like to have more options regarding how many levels deep the exported file list is, otherwise I end up with 33k lines of text. Good but not customizable.

Terminal: Some courageous experts have shared how to do it with Terminal, but I'm not super comfortable with it, and most importantly, the Volume I tried to execute the command on didn't load ("No such file or directory") - maybe because there are spaces in my Volume names? (this tip did not work when trying to add a Volume name with spaces in a Terminal prompt to output file names...). Did not work.

At the end of the day I ended up purchasing a paid app, but since I use several different user accounts across several machines, I would love to know if there is an easier and free way that I can use in the future.

Is there a way to get Finder to remember all my tabs and reopen them after restarting?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:58 PM PDT

Just like with Terminal, I tend to have many Finder tabs open most of the time. Sometimes, I need to restart Finder and OneDrive (e.g., see https://superuser.com/questions/1546441/very-high-cpu-usage-for-distnoted-on-mac#:~:text=Distnoted%20is%20a%20system%20message,and%20is%20tied%20to%20finder.), and it is troublesome to reopen each Finder tab one by one. Terminal has a nice feature to remember all my tabs and even re-run the commands that were last run in each of them. Is there any way to do something similar with Finder?

How do I type an acute accent on the Russian PC keyboard layout?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:47 PM PDT

I need to write an acute accent over over a Russian letter to indicate stress. Google tells me to switch to QWERTY, hold the letter key and select the accented one. This types a U+00E9 LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH ACUTE, but I'm using Cyrillic letters, not Latin letters and what if my letter isn't in the Latin alphabet, like И?

How to automate find and replace in numbers with a predefined list?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:54 PM PDT

How can I automated find and replace in a Numbers file based on a predefined master list?

For example, I want to find and replace all:

  • "ABC" to "XYZ"
  • "123" with "789"

A few thoughts / workflow expectations:

  • My find and replace routine has become burdensome as I manually run through 20+ find / replace actions
  • Find and replace will be for the whole document, not limited to a certain column, row, cell
  • I want to have running master list that I can add to
  • I would like to open a file, run this script and have the find/replace done
  • It would be great if I can incorporate a wildcard in the find

How to resolve missing "Setup" button for Cardio Fitness feature?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:52 PM PDT

Apple recently added the ability to track "Cardio Fitness" levels in the Health app using newer models of the Apple Watch.

Official setup documentation: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211856

The seemingly-critical Setup button does not appear for me, and it appears this is a fairly widespread issue. See this thread for someone else's experience.

In my case I'm using an iPhone XR with Apple Watch 6, both with latest OS.

Is there a known solution to this problem yet?

How to prevent iPhone 12 Pro from overheating?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:23 PM PDT

My iPhone 12 Pro (Max) gets extremely hot (to the point the screen dims, and beyond) with regularity, usually several times per day with just regular use of fairly basic apps.

Others have reported the problem as well:

Goodnotes + Airplay with cable?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:11 PM PDT

A few weeks ago I was trying to give a lecture on Zoom by sharing my iPad screen using Airplay. My Zoom session was through a Mac computer so the connection to the iPad was over the WiFi. The issue I had was things were very laggy. An audience member asked if I was connecting the two devices over WiFi and suggested that was the problem; I should use a cable to connect them.

I'm working on preparing for future lectures and I noticed that the presentation mode in Goodnotes does not work as intended if you go to Zoom, share screen, and "iPhone/iPad via cable."

When I go to the Goodnotes website, they suggest the following:

1. Connect your iPad to your computer via USB-C or Lightning cable 2. Start or join a Zoom meeting on your computer and click "Share Screen" 3. Select "iPad/iPhone via AirPlay" ...

I am playing around with my iPad and computer and it seems like, indeed, if the two are connected by a cable, the AirPlay connection will work even if the WiFi on my iPad is off. That just seems counterintuitive to me: you don't choose the "iPad via cable" option, but instead choose Airplay even though they're connected with a cable? I also haven't seen anything online about Airplay working with a hard connection in the event the WiFi is off.

Am I understanding this right? I guess this is more than a solved problem by now. Was the audience member right that for Zoom lectures over Goodnotes, it's best to use a hard connection (with Airplay)?

"Automator could not convert the input data to the desired type." in quick action

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:27 PM PDT

I want to be able to view a location embedded in a HEIC file quickly by using 'quick action'.

It is how it looks like when I tried to use the function via finder.

enter image description here

Here is the definition of the quick action in Automator.

However when I run the quick action, I got this error message "Automator could not convert the input data to the desired type."

What does it mean and how can I fix it?

Why does Finder give several different sizes in Get Info?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:26 PM PDT

I'm looking at the size of a folder in get info, and Finder is giving me two different sizes, differing by about 10 GB! I'm curious as to the reason and source of this size difference. In the image below, it appears to be giving both a size of 43.51 GB and 53.24 GB.

same folder, different sizes

If this is useful, I'm running Catalina 10.15.7.

Stop malware from being executed by launchd

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:26 PM PDT

I've got this program running on my computer, /var/root/Library/Application Support/.SectionChannel.dp/SectionChanneldd, which Norton has identified as the malware OSX.Malcol. However, Norton has been thoroughly unhelpful in doing anything about it. I've tried deleting the file as well as sending a SIGKILL to the running process. However, it keeps restarting.

Digging further via Activity Monitor, I discovered that the parent process is launchd. How can I figure out what is causing launchd to execute this program and stop it? Resetting my computer does not fix the issue.

Running launchctl list | grep Section shows

5727 -9 com.help.SectionChanneld - 0 com.SectionChannel.system

EDIT:

I ran launchctl dumpstate and searched for all of the .plist files associated with the malware. I deleted those files, restarted my computer, and now everything appears to be fine. However, is this sufficient?

Why does Mac OS include both ABC and US keyboard layouts when the two perform the same functions?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:32 PM PDT

The ABC and US keyboard layouts on Mac OS appear identical in layout. Is there any reason why Apple chose to include two identical keyboard layouts that perform the same functions?

Input source changing when it shouldn't

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 01:53 PM PDT

I have three input sources in the menu, one I use 99%. The others, I switch to occasionally to type a glyph they support and then switch back.

In the preferences, "automatically switch to a document's input source" was checked, but since I always witch back to the main one, all documents should be set to that. And most of the time, that works as expected.

However, once out of several logins, MacOS seems to be in a mode that requires switching to the first one in the list every time focus is changed to a different window or tab. And some of those times, it does not allow me to switch back. Apple is ignoring the bug report.

Any ideas why or how to fix? I did turn off the auto-switch. That should help, but shouldn't be necessary (and if ever I have a document that is all Chinese or Greek, I'd rather have it on).

This started with Big Sur, and has been happening from 11.0 to 11.2.3

Disks won't stay unmounted

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:25 PM PDT

When not using my 2019 MBP, I keep it in a back room plugged into a bank of backup drives.

When I want to use it, I want to take it into the living room. So, I go and dismount any drives that aren't doing a backup. I could stop/skip a running backup, but normally, I let it finish and then dismount. I don't unplug them, because only one is plugged in—it is a powered hub for the others.

Unfortunately, frequently when I come back, they're all mounted again. I don't know whether this is triggered by auto-logout, by logging back in, or just some timer. But it's irritating—I have to dismount again and wait for write buffers to be processed before I can unplug and move the laptop.

Is there a way to make them stay unmounted?

2008 MBPro Crashes when reinstalling Yosemite

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 12:40 AM PDT

enter image description hereMy friend asked me to reset this old MBP to its original state so she could pass it on to her niece. The erase went ok. The re-install, not so much. It does the install, but then when the installer reboots, I get the attached error and it reboots itself. Then gets the same error and reboots, etc., etc., etc., until I have to shut it off lest it overheat. I am aware that there is an issue with the battery, however, it is plugged into the AC, so that should (IMHO) not be at issue, however, I'm stumped. As my personal MBP is much newer, I can't even create a boot USB for it as the machine can't run Big Sur and it's a ridiculous undertaking to make a Yosemite boot USB while running Big Sur. I've run a repair on all available disk drives, multiple times and attempted a reinstall multiple times. I'm seriously at a loss. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. (My personal opinion: send the dang thing in for recycling and buy her niece a lower cost iMac, but I don't think that's going to happen.)

Oh, and for the record: it would boot up and run just fine prior to my wiping it and doing the reinstall, so I'm not sure if I did something, or what I did uncovered a 'masked' problem that is only evident because I'm attempting to reinstall Yosemite.

Also, it had been upgraded to Catalina prior to the wipe/reinstall, so I'm not sure if that's causing an issue.

CTRL-OPTION-R did not allow me to boot from the internet (apparently the model is too old), so that's a no go. Neither did SHIFT-CTRL-OPTION-R. Turning it on and trying to run the Diagnostics didn't work either. (From what I read, hold the D after the chime until you see the progress bar...but this MBP doesn't 'chime' when you restart it, so it's a guessing game for me).

Again, any insight anyone can give me would be extremely helpful.

Verbose Mode during startup not working on Apple Silicon

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 01:11 PM PDT

I have a Mac mini 2020 (with the Apple Silicon M1 chip).

I want it to boot up in verbose mode, i.e. the details of the boot process should be logged as text on the screen during bootup.

The following command is recommended by several articles:

sudo nvram boot-args="-v"

And this does indeed work fine on my Macbook Pro 2018 and Mac mini 2018, however, it seems to do nothing on my Mac mini 2020.

I have confirmed using nvram -p (and System Information) that the boot-args property is indeed set to -v, but it has no effect.

Is there some way to get this to work?

Sharing contacts with husband who has separate Apple id

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 01:59 PM PDT

My husband and I have separate Apple IDs. We have family sharing and are able to share our calendars. But we want to share our contacts in a way that is easily accessible on all our computers and devices (Mac OS and iOS.) We keep our computers and devices up to date so we are running recent if not the latest versions of OS and iOS. I have not found a way to share our contacts in the Contacts app without constantly tweaking or creating a third Apple ID, which is too fiddly for me. Is there a third party option that would meet our needs?

Thanks.

Time machine backup stops when computer sleeps/logs out [closed]

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:45 PM PDT

The Time machine backup stops when I think my computer automatically goes to sleep as it does every few minutes. It goes back to the login screen. After I log back in the back up has stopped and the external disk ejected . There is an error message saying something along the lines that the disk was improperly ejected.

Edit: it's a Macbook air 2020, running on battery (but I clicked the setting on Time Machine to allow backups running on battery)

I am not sure why it goes to sleep every few minutes. Maybe I set it up for that a long time ago for privacy issues, but forgot.

It goes back to a place where it asks for the password, I'm not sure if it's the login screen or the password dialog. It's the same screen that comes up if I reboot the computer. There's only one user on my Mac to sign in anyway.

But I think it's just the password dialog.

My question is , how to make the Time Machine backup work , when it currently stops every time that happens ?

Is there a way that Time Machine could still work while it sleeps? Someone mentioned to me, just make sure the disk does not dismount ?

Or do I just have to change a setting so that it doesn't go to sleep or log out automatically every few minutes

I think I would prefer the former option, to keep the password page coming up for privacy

How do I use all four cameras of the iPhone 12 in WhatsApp?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:06 PM PDT

The iPhone 12 has four cameras; the front camera, a general use one on the back, a wide angle one and a zoom camera.

During video chats placed with the WhatsApp app, only the front camera and the general use one of the back can be accessed. It is therefore very difficult to show certain things during a call that would require the wide angle or zoom cameras.

Can I use all 4 cameras of the iPhone 12 in WhatsApp, and how? Or is there an app for video chat that supports them all?

Cakebrew says "Error: Calling 'brew search' with no arguments to output formulae is disabled!"

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 12:42 AM PDT

I am a new macOS user. I just did a fresh install on an A1398 MacBook Pro and upgraded to Big Sur. As I am used to package managers, I decided to investigate Homebrew and Cakebrew to go along with it. I was able to install Homebrew, with no warnings or errors. Then, I installed Cakebrew with the brew command.

Upon launching Cakebrew, the "All Formulae" list reports the following error:

Error: Calling 'brew search' with no arguments to output formulae is disabled! Use 'brew formulae' instead.

The same error occurs if I execute brew search on the command-line.

How can I software disable a display?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 03:05 PM PDT

I have a mac mini with two monitors but I often access it remotely over VNC. Screen Sharing (and other vnc clients) allow me to select a single display (or view both at once), but neither work well because if I view a single screen then windows will open on the other one, alerts will pop up, etc. It's also basically impossible to use with both displays shown at once on a 13in laptop screen.

I'm looking for a way to software disable one of the monitors so that I can switch to a single display when I need to.

Disk Space taken up by misc/other - not TimeMachine

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 04:02 PM PDT

I have OS X 10.15.7 running on a 500GB SSD and OmniDiskSweeper, GrandPerspective and System Information show that I have used about 270GB but only have about 30GB free. OmniDiskSweeper just counts what is there, but GrandPerspective shows 191GB of "Miscellaneous used space" (big grey box on the side) and System Profiler lists it as 'Other'. I know I should have loads of space because I moved my Photos library to an external disk and I was sitting at over 100GB at that point, but in the months since then it has ticked away.

I've tried tmutil listlocalsnapshots / but nothing shows up.

Something curious but possibly unrelated things

1: the disk drive has that second partition "- Data" and it is listed as 500GB too. It may be just me misinterpreting the read out, or poor interface design on Apple's part. The reason I mention this is that Disk Xray Lite also seems confused about disk space, claiming I have used 536GB, presumably because it has counted System > Volumes > Data > Users as well as Users, despite them appearing to be the same thing.

2: I replaced ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/Backup with an Alias that is to an external drive. I think it only backs up when that drive is plugged in, but maybe it is writing to 'other'

What third-party games have been included with Macs at some point?

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:13 PM PDT

To phrase it differently: Over the years, Mac computers have come with various pieces of software not developed by Apple, many of which are games, such as Marble Blast Gold, Bugdom, and the Big Bang Board Games suite.

After much searching, I've been unable to find a comprehensive list anywhere. What non-Apple games have been bundled with computers running Mac OS, and when were they included?

My 2018 Macbook pro 15 inch fan is running at full speed all the time. I checked activity monitor and my idle was >95%. If this is a hardware problem, is there any way to fix it without opening up the whole computer? Otherwise, are there any easy fixes? Thanks

Install Windows10 on older mac with boot camp does not provide install option

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:08 PM PDT

I'm trying to install Windows10 on my old MBP (Model: MacBookPro10,1). I prepared a USB-Stick formatted as FAT32 with a MBR. I followed this documentation (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/bootcamp-assistant/bcmp09f5f773/6.1/mac/10.14) and Step 4 says:

At the Select Tasks step, select all the tasks, then click Continue.

But in my case, the last task is not available. What do I need to do?

I'm running macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6 (all updates are installed) on that machine.

Audio out of sync after exporting from iMovie

Posted: 10 Apr 2021 10:35 PM PDT

I recorded a vlog on my iPhone 8+ and edited it in iMovie. When I play the video in iMovie, the audio is perfectly fine and in sync with the video. However, when I export it and upload it to YouTube, the audio is completely out of sync and always starts at a certain time. I've done everything I could find to fix this issue yet it persists. I'm extremely desperate and I'm looking for a solution that does not include re-editing the entire clip.

What words trigger the screen effects in iMessage?

Posted: 11 Apr 2021 12:34 AM PDT

The recent update iMessage on iOS causes certain words to trigger screen effects. Also, there is a way to long-press on the send button, and bring up an interface for adding these effects.

I've found the following associations between screen effects, and the messgaes that trigger them:

  • confetti: "congratulations", "happy birthday"
  • fireworks: "happy new year"

What is the list of these?
